We advocate for the development of a training ladder, with all responders at all levels receiving the Fundamentals of Disaster Medicine course, a 15-hour program designed to teach Disaster Medicine principles to responders, regardless of training level. This course satisfies the IBODM certification prerequisite training for prehospital providers, with more advanced courses designed for nurses, mid-level providers, and physicians.

A 15-hour prerequisite course that covers essential principles in disaster medicine, including community and hospital-based disaster preparedness, hazard vulnerability analysis (HVA), and integrated response strategies. This course is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education (CAPCE) for 15 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs).

Upon course completion, students earn a certificate from the Disaster Medicine Institute. The Fundamentals of Disaster Medicine course also serves as a preparation pathway for the International Board of Disaster Medicine (IBODM) certification exam, supporting learners’ goals for professional certification in Disaster Medicine. Upon completion of the Fundamentals of Disaster Medicine course, paramedic students can earn 15 CEHs.
